Conceived in 1994 by Shahiduzzman, an innovative journalist,
The News Network was formally launched in December 1995. First of its kind
in Bangladesh, the agency specialises in writing news features on issues
that affect Bangladesh society such as poverty, women's empowerment, children's
rights, democracy, environment and basic human rights. Since its inception
Shahiduzzaman, Editor of
the News Network, has brought together a group of new generation journalists
and writers who are committed to a cause: to expose what is wrong in the
society and to encourage those who are trying to bring about a change.
News Network has begun its modest journey with the financial assistance
from the Ford Foundation, a internationally reputed donor agency. Objectives
of the News Network are to highlight the ills that afflict the society
and cause public sufferings so that policy makers can take remedial measures.
Apart from reports, it produces news analysis and interviews; conducts
surveys and short study; organises roundtable conferences and discussion
meetings on issues that shape the society. The agency has a regular training
programme aimed at improving the writing skills of the country's journalists.
In doing so it specially encourages women to take journalism as a career
and trains them. This is highly important because not many Bangladeshi
women become journalists mainly for lack of congenial job environment.
News Network also provides
client specific services
to its local and international clients.
