Saarc foreign secretaries yesterday decided to seek directions from the South Asian heads of state and government assembling here at the 13th Saarc summit on how to ensure full implementation of the South Asian Free Trade Area (Safta) by the January 1, 2006 deadline. >> The historic city of Dhaka is fully ready to play host to the heads of state or government of seven member-states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). >> The two-day 31st meeting of the SAARC Standing Committee comprising the Foreign Secretaries of the member-countries failed to reach a consensus on the inclusion of Afghanistan in the SAARC as its eighth member.>> With the 13th SAARC Summit less than twenty four hours away, the whole country including the long porous border, highways, waterways and the venue of the inaugural session and other important buildings, and hotels where the VVIPs and other dignitaries will stay. >> A proposal for setting up a regional power grid is likely to be adopted at the 13th Saarc Summit to be held in the capital on November 12-13

BDR seizes 32 pistols, 5,000 bullets in CHT Our Correspondent, Bandarban The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in a special operation yesterday seized 32 German made pistols and 5,000 bullets in Palongchhari in Naikhangchhari upazila.
Official sources said a BDR team led by Capt Mahabub of Naikhangchhari zone challenged a number of people carrying heavy goods.
As they did not respond, the BDR fired at the men, who immediately ran away leaving their goods behind, said the sources.
The BDR seized the 9mm pistols, 5,000 bullets and 64 empty magazines from the spot.
The border guards also arrested a Bangladeshi indigenous man, said a BDR press release.
Official sources said the special operation started on August 19 in Naikhangchhari, Thanchi and Alikadam bordering areas.
The spokesman of Bandarban region BDR headquarters said, "About 2,000 members of Bangladesh Army, the BDR and police took part in the operation."
"The forces in 50 groups are continuing the combing operation to seize more arms and ammunition and arrest criminals," the spokesman added.
